David Subacchi
Uncles
I have a great uncle I never met, in Italy,
A soldier, killed in action
In the First World War,
The ‘great war to end all wars’
His name is carved in stone,
On a town square memorial,
Many miles from
Where they shot him.
I have an uncle I never met, in Italy,
Murdered by Nazis,
In the Second World War,
Falsely accused
Of hiding resistance fighters,
His name is carved in stone
Right outside the village church,
Where they shot him.
